A participant is connected with a registered nurse who will help you navigate the health care system, offering support, information, cost-saving strategies and encouragement along the way.

The nurse can:
• Answer questions and help you get the information you need to decide on a treatment plan
• Help you understand what to expect during surgery and throughout your hospital stay
• Coordinate your care with your musculoskeletal team
• Stay in touch with you for up to 90 days after you leave the hospital to make sure you’re healing as expected
• Be available to call whenever you have a question or concern

A previous injury or general “wear and tear” (known as osteoarthritis). Less commonly, rheumatoid arthritis may be the reason.

• Nerve pain caused by degenerative disc disease

• Instability (abnormal movement between vertebrae)

• Bony pressure on the spinal cord or nerves (called spinal stenosis)

The COE network features some of the top musculoskeletal facilities in the United States. These facilities are experienced in treating joint issues and performing musculoskeletal procedures. Every year, each facility is evaluated to make sure it meets high quality standards.

For a hip or knee replacement, expect two to three days. Spine surgery with fusion or bone excision means a hospital stay of about two to five days. Most people go home after surgery to recover. However, depending on your procedure and any other medical conditions, a skilled nursing facility or inpatient rehab at the hospital may help you recover faster.
